How A Firewall Can Help You In The Fight Against Anti Spam

When many people here the word or term firewall they think of the fireproof or fire-resistant wall assembly that is designed to both help and slow down the spread of literal fire in a building so it cannot spread from one side of the wall to the other. While we are not here to talk about that type of physical firewall, digitally speaking we are trying to prevent to spread of the harmful and unwanted material of spam. When it comes to computing, a firewall is usually referring to software or in some cases hardware that puts a block or wall between a computing device so that attempts to access to the device from unauthorized communication is both blocked and prevented. Anti spam firewalls can be setup and configured so that only authorized connections can be made to the device, so that this method in security can be effective.

A typical antivirus firewall is most commonly used on end user computer systems. The reason being that there are literally 100s of millions of average people, business professionals, students, etc that all use the internet daily and are thus putting their computer at risk and exposure to the threats the internet has to offer. That does not mean we have to be scared of using the internet, because there are many ways to protect ourselves and our computers from harm. It is much like driving. Although when an individual decides to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and drive, they are exposing themselves to dangers such as weather conditions, malfunctions of the vehicle, and other cars on the road. That does not mean we should be scared of driving, but instead be willing to take the necessary precautions to do so safely; the same can be said about internet usage.

When we are connected to the internet there is the possibility that our computers and all the personal files and information on them can be subject to harm by spammers. We are not saying that once you connect to the internet you information is open and available to the public, but by connecting to the internet, by extension, we can get in contact with the many harmful attacks that are online. Some attacks can simply come about by files being put on our computer that we unknowingly download that can use our computer to spread harmful material to others or maybe the attack can be that of gathering personal information from our computer so it can be used in a way to harm others or we ourselves. Again, this information is not to scare you but instead to inform you as to why it is detrimental to the well-being of yourself and your computer that you consider looking into appropriate firewall protection.

Sometimes when we buy a new computer or use a public computer, many times they are already setup with a firewall. For example the Windows operating system has one built in that is pretty decent for the average user. Those using public computers at maybe a library or through WiFi at their college or some other place will be happy to know that many times these networks area already setup with a built in firewall so that when you use their connection, your computer system is safe. How are we to know if when we are online, our connection is protected in this way? There are many ways to easily find this out, and one of them is using a online firewall test tool that can be used on any computer as long as you are connected to the internet; an example of one is found HERE. Another way to find out is to a firewall check on your actual computer itself because, as mentioned earlier, operating systems like Windows XP and beyond have a built in firewall. To test your firewall that is on a Windows machine, you can follow the instructions HERE. You may feel that it is a lot of work to go through and learn all of these tactics to try and be firm about anti spam, but you will regret looking back after your computer has been infected with some type of virus or malware. An even worse thing that can happen is the possibility of identity theft or worse. The point is take whatever precautions you reasonably can to protect both yourself and your computer; and of course a good way of doing that is having a PC firewall.

At times we are directly asked which is the best firewall software available to date but, as mentioned above, we cannot suggest or recommend one over another because we do not have all the facts that will be needed for each individual to have one that suites their personal and computer system requirements. Others want us to tell them if it is better to have a desktop firewall that is setup on their actual computer, or a good antivirus firewall that comes with and can be setup in their router. Again, we cannot answer that question since there are too many variables to consider. What is important to keep in mind that whatever type of firewall you have, you can feel safer knowing that there is something between you and the internet attempting to block security threats to your computer system whether it is a Mac or a Windows PC. Whenever you have an active good firewall in place it is much harder for viruses, spam, and any type of threat to infect your system.

One thing you want in a firewall is the option to block or protect specific ports on your machine that are commonly attacked by spammers to gain access to your system. Along with the option to block these ports, you also want to have a setup that is capable of creating a report of the type of activity that your firewall is engaged in. You want to be able to see the details of what exactly the firewall is preventing your computer from doing, as well as what it has blocked from gaining access to your computer and how the attempt was made. This is important because there are times that our computer is already infected and we have no idea about it because there are no signs of an intrusion. Having a firewall log to tell you about this type of activity will inform you that a threat is already on your computer and it is trying to attack others using your computer. From there you can take the necessary steps to remove this issue from your computer. On the flip side of that if you have a setup that keeps a record of different types of attempts an outside party is making to attack your system, that data can be sent to the developers so they can stay updated to the latest tactics spammers are using to infect computers.

There is also a very large community of people who use their computers and the internet for multiplayer gaming that are affected negatively due to having an active firewall when they are using the internet. For that reason many ask questions regarding how they can remove firewall software and settings on their computer. The solution for this common issue with online multiplayer gaming is usually not disabling or removing your firewall, instead we suggest you look into steps to bypass firewall software on your computer. What you need to do is look through any documentation that came along with your game to find out which ports the specific game uses to connect to the online community. If this info is not provided or you cannot find it, you can always search online using a search engine like Google to find out what other players have done to bypass their firewall.
