Why Have A Groupwise Spam Filter Setup

There was a time some months back when we were hearing of a lot of complaints from consumers that were having their Groupwise mail servers attacked by spammers in large numbers. Something we often see from spammers is that once they find a way to attack a certain mail server setup, they begin to attack with regularity and in large numbers. It is almost as if they have a community that provides announcements, updates, and tips to attack a certain platform. One way to combat that is to stay on top of what options you have as the mail server administrator to prevent such attacks.

We did a bit of research as to what various companies were suggesting to block such attacks, and it seems that most of the time the recommendation is to setup a filter; whether its hosted on the server or not. As you may or may not know there are pros and cons of both of those filtering setups. If you are looking for an itemized and detailed list of what those pros and cons are, give us a few weeks to put something together that will go into that in more detail. In the meantime, just try to be patient and at the same time take some sort of action. As we all know, doing a little of something is better than doing absolutely nothing when it comes to the fight on spam. Now you might be wondering what some of your options are when it comes to setting up such a filter or rule for your Groupwise 5.2, 6.5, or 7 mailing server, right?

Well a few products or setups that we have seen mentioned quite often are spam software filters such as trimMail who was produced and developed by dymeta, Kernel for Lotus Notes for Groupwise(but it is quite expensive), and a Groupwise to Exchange migration software that will allow you to change as many Groupwise mailboxes to Exchange mailboxes as you would like to name a few. We are also finding that many admins are using M+ Guardian, the former GWGuardian which now goes by the name of Modusgate, or simply using GWAVA4. Finally you could simply setup filters within the settings of your Groupwise server by assigning certain rules that will move, block, or delete messages that contain certain criteria that you know for sure is unwanted. HERE you will find a simple step by step walk through as to how you can do that. Hopefully this will help you successfully fight spam being targeted at your Groupwise mailing server.
