If you are looking for a mic to use with your computer, you may not have to run out to the store. If you have a pair of earbuds lying around your home, you might be able to get the earbuds to function as a mic. This trick won’t work every time, but it’s definitely worth trying.
Step One: Plug Your Earbuds Into The Headphone Jack
Locate the headphone jack on your computer. In many cases, you’ll find a small symbol that indicates that the jack is designed to be used for headphones. And it doesn’t matter what kind of headphones or earbuds, even active noise-cancelling earbuds can work.
Plug your earbuds into that slot.
If you’re not sure which slot you should be using, try testing the earbuds in multiple slots. You should be able to figure things out quickly.
You may be able to start using your earbuds as a mic as soon as they are plugged in. Go ahead and test your earbuds; see if they are picking up sound. If your earbuds aren’t functioning as a microphone, you should move on to the next step of this process.
Step Two: Adjust Your Settings
In some cases, you may have to alter the settings on your computer before your earbuds will function as a mic.
Open up the sound settings on your computer. Then find the microphone options.
Once you’ve found the settings for the microphone, you should be able to select the device that your computer uses for sound input. Select your earbuds, and you’ll be able to use them as your mic.
If you want to use your microphone with a specific piece of software, like Discord, you may have to adjust the settings there as well. Make sure that you have your earbuds selected as your microphone. If you have a different mic selected, your earbuds may not do what you need them to do.
Step Three: Troubleshooting
If your earbuds still aren’t working as a microphone, it’s time for you to do some troubleshooting. There are a number of things you can do in order to get your microphone up and running.
You may want to try using a few different sets of earbuds. Sometimes, your computer won’t recognize a specific set of earbuds as a microphone, but another set will work perfectly.
It’s also a good idea to tinker with your sound settings. Try recording yourself so that you can see what you sound like. Make sure your voice comes in crystal clear.
If your voice is faint or hard to hear, try adjusting the settings. A few tweaks may be able to solve the problem.
If you don’t have a microphone at home, but you do have a set of earbuds, you may be able to make those earbuds function as a mic.
Obviously, earbuds are no replacement for a high-quality microphone. With that said, a lot of cheap earbuds can do the same things that a basic, inexpensive microphone can.
Follow these steps and see if you can make your favorite earbuds double as a microphone.
